""A native of Bordeaux, Guillie received his degree from the University of Paris in 1807. As a physician at Montovilet Hospital, he embarked on a study of the blind and thereafter devoted his life to this cause. He instituted the first French clinic for the blind 1818 and helped form a large ophthalmological library in Paris. The present work outlines his methods for instructions of the blind. Various engravings are used to portray the crafts and occupations he thought suitable for his students. The book itself is the work of blind craftsmen."" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1361). ""The author chronicles the philanthropic deeds directed toward the blind up to that time and describes the first attempts at special graphic methods for the use of the blind. Of particular interest is the account of his methods of instructing the blind in various crafts. Guillie endeavored to understand and encourage the communication which he observed between blind and deaf-mute children at the time when the two institutions were united"" (Slg. Becker 169). - Hirsch-Hübotter II, 906/907. Wellcome III, 80. Gutes, nur stellenweise unbedeutend gebräuntes Exemplar."
